In the western half of the empire, the Brisigavi seniores is listed as one of auxilia palatina units in the Magister Peditum's infantry roster; it assigned to the "Comes" Hispenias. Its shield pattern as shown in various manuscripts is as below:
The shield pattern shows a white boss (yellow in B), encircled with an indigo-purplish band (yellow in W, white in M). The main ground is plain white, and the rim is red. Between the two is a yellow band (green in W). M and W have a further white band between this and the rim, while O, P, and Ff have a green band in the same place; B has nothing.
Although there is evidence that many labels attached to the shield patterns illustrating the western auxilia platina have been shifted from their proper place, it is not clear that this has happened to this unit; it may well be labelled with the correct shield pattern.
The name Brisigavi is tribal, and often, as in Ammianus, spelled Brisgavi; it belongs to a sub-branch of the Germanic Alamanni; the name lives on in the modern German region named Breisgau; there is also a Brisigavi iuniores listed in the Notitia: it is the next unit listed after the Brisigavi seniores in the Magister Peditum's infantry roster, and is assigned to his Italian command.
