About me...

mug shot
Yup, that's my ugly mug: formally receeding, now just plain-old balding! I was born in Derby, UK, on March 16, 1969. I have lived half of my life in the South Island of New Zealand, with most of the rest of time split between the UK and Japan. I might call myself both a 'Kiwi' and 'British' depending on place and inclination - I don't have much truck with nationalism. If forced to chose I tend to side with NZ because I happen to prefer living there.

Until recently, I was a research chemist (I obtained my doctorate in 1994 from Sheffield University); Keiko, my wife, is also a chemist. Finding suitable employment for both of us in any one place is a major hassle. At the moment, we are rather nomadic as a result, but we are very keen to settle down - ideally in Christchurch, New Zealand, but that is, alas, for the future and will no doubt involve career changes for at least one of us.

Tired of being a "bench-monkey", I have recently left the lab and am now working in an international patent office in Osaka. As this involves combining scientific knowledge, (English) language and a major dose of pedantry, I think it suits my character...

My major hobby is wargaming, and the vast majority of this web-site is devoted to it. I am a bit of a bookworm, and an avid historian (I studied ancient history for a BA in New Zealand, and I still keep up with military-related aspects of ancient history to tie in with my wargaming). Outdoors, my favourite pursuit is bird-watching.
