Disclaimer: Remember, a lot of what comes below is speculation. Hopefully informed speculation, but speculation nonetheless. Comments welcome! (lukeuedasarson "at" gmail.com)

What exactly distinguished a unit of "native" or "indigenous" cavalry from other Equites is unclear. No field army units are so-called, so the implication that the men of these units were locals is strong; if so, this raises the question of "how local?" That a third of these units are promoti is interesting, given the hypothesis of Equites promoti being ex-legionary cavalry detachments. A Tetrarchic inscription (CIL 3,6726 = AE 1993,1607) from Avatha (Al-Bakhra in modern Syria) mentioning an officer of the EQ PROMOT [...] INDG confirms the stationing of a unit of Equites promoti indigenae at this location - the Tetrarchic fort was 1.5 ha in size (see D. Genequand, in Levant 36 (2004), p 225-242). This inscription is the only one I am aware of mentioning a unit of Equites promoti indigenae, although Genequand reports others have been found mentioning the unit from the same site.
