Designed primarily for commerce protection, the Delfjin is speedy, well-protected and well-appointed, suitable for long range service in the far flung corners of the empire. Popular with its crews, Delfjin boasts crew-comforts unheard of in other ships, such as counter-flow cooling surfaces to keep internal room temperatures equible in tropical climes

A novel feature is the provision of a fixed-wing scouting aeroplane, to enable pirate vessels or enemy commerce raiders to be sighted far-off. Compared to many other cruisers, its armament of 4 sponson mounted 4" guns is decidedly light, and the large coal-bunkers and length of the vessel have led to a certain loss of manoeverability. However, it seems certain that more vessels of the class will be constructed, as it has met all its designers' expectations with regards to suitability for overseas service.
